CPAP Cleaning Tips to Keep Your Machine Fresh Safe and Effective
I know how you feel about keeping a CPAP machine clean. It takes time effort and patience. And it is not only cleaning that can make CPAP therapy frustrating. There are many other challenges such as mask fit machine settings and more.
The Importance of Cleaning Your CPAP
In this article I will cover four ways to properly clean your CPAP equipment. Cleaning your CPAP equipment is extremely important because poor hygiene can be a hidden factor causing tiredness. Bacteria dust and other particles can build up in your machine if it is not cleaned well. Later I will share useful tips to make cleaning easier for you.
Daily CPAP Cleaning Tips
1. Change and Maintain Your CPAP Filters
The most important part is the CPAP filter. It plays a big role in hygiene and also affects how long your machine lasts. CPAP machines use a motor to create continuous positive airway pressure. Changing the air filter regularly keeps the air you breathe cleaner and prevents dust and debris from entering the motor and other important parts.
There are two types of filters: standard and hypoallergenic. The standard filter is thinner. The hypoallergenic filter is thicker and catches dust better preventing it from reaching the core parts.
Manufacturers recommend changing the filter every three months but if it looks dirty or smells bad change it sooner.
2. Clean Your CPAP Mask Cushion Weekly
The mask cushion is like the filter because it connects directly to your breathing. The tubing and humidifier also need attention but let’s start with the cushion. You breathe in and out through the mask for many hours at night. It faces constant temperature changes moisture and even some saliva.
It is best to wash the mask cushion after every use. I know it can be time consuming but remember you do this for your health. Removing the cushion does not take long.
To clean it wash under running water using mild soap. Basic hand soap works well. Rinse thoroughly so no soap remains because you do not want toxins entering your body. Avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach or alcohol.
3. Clean Your CPAP Tubing Daily
The CPAP tubing is just as important because you breathe through it every night for hours. Clean the tubing daily. It may be long and swing around but here is a pro tip.
When you take a shower bring a plastic container with you. Add mild soap and water to the container. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or alcohol. Place the tubing and mask cushion inside and let them soak while you shower. When finished rinse thoroughly empty the container and hang the tubing so both ends are positioned to let water drip out and dry completely.
Another bonus tip is to run the machine for a few minutes at a higher air pressure after reattaching the tubing. This helps blow out any moisture left inside.
According to manufacturers such as ResMed CPAP tubing should be replaced about every six months.
4. Clean Your CPAP Humidifier Water Chamber
If you use a humidifier manufacturers recommend replacing the water chamber every six months. This is because heating water at high temperatures causes mineral buildup or corrosion. I personally used my first chamber for eight months but that is not medical advice. It is only something you might do if you have a tight budget.
Bonus Tips and Learnings
Always allow all equipment including tubing mask cushion and humidifier to dry completely. Change filters regularly and keep your CPAP machine off the floor to avoid dust buildup.
Daily washing should include the CPAP mask cushion the CPAP tubing and keeping your room free from excessive dust.
